Rhian Bell- Lauren Bowker talk..

I found this talk really interesting. She spoke about how you should approach things open minded, any lines can be crossed in the world of art if you have a good idea. Her biggest spur was the rejection of the fashion course here at Manchester Met so she had to do a fashion and textiles course instead. This was what really started her off with being creative and mixing skills together from other specialism’s- thinking outside the box.  I loved the jacket she made- the breathing jacket. She made up inks using the science lab to create a jacket which changes colour through pollution which I found amazing and exciting. I love the way she used science in her work, mixing skills from other backgrounds is an interesting way of approaching the task. She spoke about wanting to do something different and “out there” something to shock people!! The thing that really stood out to me in this talk was the project Airbus 2050. I was amazed at the fact that a fashion/textile student combined with two other people, one an engineer and one a graphic designer came up with a design for a plane. This really got me thinking about how just because we are textile students if we have an idea we can go anywhere with it. Knowing people and getting to know all sorts of people can really help develop work and create something exciting.
