Rhian Bell- Lauren Bowker talk..

I found this talk really interesting. She spoke about how you should approach things open minded, any lines can be crossed in the world of art if you have a good idea. Her biggest spur was the rejection of the fashion course here at Manchester Met so she had to do a fashion and textiles course instead. This was what really started her off with being creative and mixing skills together from other specialism’s- thinking outside the box.  I loved the jacket she made- the breathing jacket. She made up inks using the science lab to create a jacket which changes colour through pollution which I found amazing and exciting. I love the way she used science in her work, mixing skills from other backgrounds is an interesting way of approaching the task. She spoke about wanting to do something different and “out there” something to shock people!! The thing that really stood out to me in this talk was the project Airbus 2050. I was amazed at the fact that a fashion/textile student combined with two other people, one an engineer and one a graphic designer came up with a design for a plane. This really got me thinking about how just because we are textile students if we have an idea we can go anywhere with it. Knowing people and getting to know all sorts of people can really help develop work and create something exciting.

The Corridor Talk 19/03/2012 Charlotte Sleigh

I was slightly late for the talk but soon caught up when I got in, I found some parts quite interesting and others not so interesting.

www.corridormanchester.com

The website explains the project and each opportunity it will bring.

I particularly enjoyed the part on Enviroment and Infrastructure, in this I-trees and Green roofs were mentioned, I wasn't completely sure what a Green roof was so I decided to look into this more and found it's a roof of a building that is covered with plants with grow through a  waterproof membrane. I then realised I had seen this before on the programme Grand Designs. It gives the illusion that a roof is made out grass which I think looks good design wise and is also enviromentally firendly. I've just realised that this actually links in with my idea of maybe comflarging the indside/outside of a building, iIt would be intresting to experiment with natural forms/materials to do this.

Kate Egan Talk - Kate Ward

From reading everyones posts I think everyone agree Kates talk came at the right time, it certainly did for me. I found that her work she showed us gave us a clearer view of what was expected of us, as well as showing that there were no limitations.

I also thought the talk from Richard Brooke (from Manchester School of Architecture) was beneficial. I thought it gave us a bigger insight to what the plans for the building are, as well as how it’s being built. A sneak peak of the columns was great too, as ide been wondering what they had taken from the special collections!! I now can’t wait for Ailsa to go visit and hopefully show us some pictures.

I found this artist whilst reading the daily mail online and found her work really inreguging and I had to read about it straight away.

When I started my arrivals task my initial plan was to describe arriving in Cornwall as this is somewhere I frequently went on family holidays to. I used to love it we always stayed on a farm that was in the middle of no where I always felt like I was in a completely different world when I went. Whilst writting my description I found myself over exaggerating descriptions and and making it slightly surreal.

I wanted to somehow combine this with the theme of Manchester and I have taken photographs varying from large intimidating buildings in Manchester to more traditional period buildings such as the town hall. When walking around Manchester I can somtimes find it very enclosed with the tall office blocks towering over you and covering the sky, it's a far cry from a place in the countryside like Cornwall.

When I think about how I could combine the countryside/ a surreal place with Manchester,I keep on getting images in my head of trees growing out of buildings and lamposts truning into giant sunflowers. When I saw Cecilia Paredes work it got me thinking about camoflarging. I could possibly create some kind of pattern/digital image that might be projected around a room so that it covers the walls, celling and floor so that when your in that room you don't feel like your in the middle of Manchester it feels far away and surreal. Or I thought about a pattern/digital image being projected onto the outside of a building, so that it completely covers it and it no longers looks like a big, harsh, stark white/glass block like all the other buildings seem to be today.

Arrivals - Kate Ward

My place of arrival was Cornwall. It was a summer road trip last summer with one of my best friends. We were so excited it was the first time ide driven that far, well couldn’t or driven any further if ide of wanted. We had all our things in my little car ready for our adventure(bit like when I moved to Manchester) We set off in the middle of the night so we could get there early and make a day of it, as soon as we got there. Wed both been down to Cornwall a lot before, myself, was with my family, but this time it was different. My friend and I are both art people, who met during our foundation course, so were both interested in a lot of the same stuff.

For me I like Cornwall as I think its quant and scenic. It’s all about the atmosphere, laid back, yet still buzzing with people and lots of things to do. I’ve never felt it anywhere else, beauty and it’s in ENGLAND! Our trip was for exploring so what better place to start than at the beach.

It was quiet a journey to the beach and took us a while to get there. We decided we would walk it from the camp site we were staying at, but we kept following the signs and it didn’t seem to be taking us in the right direction. By the end we had gone through the middle of a golf course over an old railway line and over some very large sand dunes, until eventually we could see it, the beach! We reached the sand and the sun came out began to come out, the clouds were clearing and all our efforts had paid off, we couldn’t wait to dip our feet in the water. As well as finding shells acting like big kids investigating. It felt like we were the only ones there, it was so quiet so relaxed and tranquille. For me the beauty was in the ripples of the sand.

EXPLORING - Eden Project

Ide seen what the Eden project looked like, but nothing prepared me for the strange looking domes, inside was so real, so amazing. It simple took my breath away… quite literally in the rainforest, it was so hot. The Eden project was somewhere ide always wanted to go mainly because nature, plants and the environment interests me. It was just so amazing. There was so many things explore.

The exotic flowers and textures, the wall of sunflowers, the vegetable garden, the giant bee and the dancing women attached to a balloon in the rainforest, abit like a fantasy land.

Rhian Bell- Infra_Manc Cube Exhibition..

I found the exhibition didn't really relate to my project however it was interesting, I noticed that some of the mapped plans looked like drawings full of marks which interested me..

(download)

I seen the point of the exhibition for me was to show the processes of making and mapping ideas to create something that changes how we do things and go about our everyday lifes.

Rhian Bell- Kate Egan's talk

I found the talk by Kate very interesting and helpful, showing us her work from when she did a degree and the work she creates now for several commissions was inspiring..

She talked about creating crazy and almost outrageous things. Things that will make people think and wonder what we are showing through our work. Our work should be fun and exciting!!

She got me thinking about creating something temporary or visual maybe a projection. I also started thinking about surfaces and how the interior of the new building could be transformed into something amazing.

I liked her idea of wrapping the buildings in knits..
